Click the Advanced toolbar button to open the advanced options dialog. Each symbology has its own options and displays a preview so you can see how each option changes the barcode. Some common advanced options are described below.

Add-On Barcode Distance

Some barcode symbologies include an add-on barcode to store supplementary information. For example, ISBN barcodes store an International Standard Book Number and typically include an add-on barcode to store the price of the book. This option specifies the distance between the main barcode and add-on barcode. The units of measure are X-dimensions where an X-dimension is the width of the narrowest bar of the barcode. An ISBN barcode having a factor of 100% (0.3300 mm) and an add-on barcode distance of 7.0X will have 2.31 mm of space (7 multiplied by 0.3300 mm) between the main barcode and add-on barcode.

Human Readable Font Above Barcode

Most barcode symbologies display a human-readable version of the barcode value underneath the bars. Some symbologies, such as ISBN, also display the barcode value above the bars. This option specifies what font should be used for this text. The "Automatic" option is recommended.

Light Margins

A barcode must have a certain amount of white space to the left and right of the bars. If there is not enough white space, barcode scanners may be unable to read the barcode. This is not a problem if the barcode is printed on a white or other lightly colored surface; however, if the barcode is placed onto a darker background, perhaps as part of a product package design, care must be taken to ensure that there is adequate white space. A light margin is a strip of white space added to the left and right of a barcode to represent the minimum about of white space. For transparent EPS output, the light margins are added by increasing the size of the bounding box.

Light Margin Indicator

A light margin indicator is a "<" or ">" symbol drawn in the lower corner of a light margin.

This symbol serves as a reminder to designers of the importance of keeping the light margin area clear. If another design element is touching or covering the light margin indicator, it is too close to the barcode.
